Pentecost Sunday

The birth of a child brings joy and hope to parents, families and communities. Even in the darkness of the last few months we have experienced heart-warming moments when we have seen pictures of new-born babies with their proud parents. The new life they bring is like light breaking through the darkness and hope overcoming despair.

Pentecost is understood as the birth of the Church. The Holy Spirit brings new life to the disciples breaking through their fear and bringing them courage. Locked doors are opened, and they move out of isolation with new energy and enthusiasm. Filled with the fire of the Holy Spirit they become powerful witnesses to the Kingdom of God. Following in the footsteps of Jesus they proclaim the Kingdom, not only in words but in action. Jesus may be gone from their sight but lives in their hearts. The Spirit enables them to understand who they are and to embrace their mission to keep the life and love of Jesus alive. They gather people together and build communities that are rooted in Jesus Christ. They are recognised as Christians by their love and unity.

As we celebrate Pentecost, we open our minds and hearts to the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit poured into our hearts and baptism. The Spirit changes our hearts and guides us to a place of freedom and hope. In the light of God’s Spirit, we understand more deeply who we truly are and who we are called to be. As we embrace the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we become witnesses to the life and love of Jesus. We are one in the Spirit as together we build communities of love and mercy.

We pray this weekend as sisters and brothers united in the Spirit that we will continue to grow in faith, hope and love. As we face the challenges of the Coronavirus crisis with courage and patience, we ask the Holy Spirit to guide us and to strengthen us. We remember with love and affection Francy Murphy, Krystal Mc Carthy, Maureen Dowdall, John Simpson and all our deceased relatives and friends. May God’s Spirit of peace bring comfort and hope to all who are carrying the heavy burden of grief.

We will work with each other

We will work side by side

We will guard each other’s dignity

And they’ll know we are Christians by our love
